We left Clifton Harbor, Union Island at 7:30 am, heading for Grenada.
The seas got a bit rough as we passed by "Kick 'em Jenny"
(an active submerged volcano).
(an active submerged volcano).
But that was due to the deeper water (3000 ft)
meeting the shallows (600 ft),
not to an eruption.

We motor-sailed all the way
and approached St. George's, Grenada 7 hours later:
The queen had to circle Dance Aweigh in the Carenage (outer harbor)
while I put the dinghy back in the water.
This was because our marina slip would be "Med Moor"
(the stern tied to the dock, & the bow to a mooring).
If we left the dinghy on the stern davits,
we would not be able to get on & off the boat.
Here's Dance Aweigh in her "slip" at Port Louis ("Louie") Marina:
And the queen's looking good after her long voyage!
Nice little dockside shops:
And, the Port Louis Marina Office:
Of course, the reason we skipped Cariacou & made a fast track to Grenada
was this:
Yes indeed, the belt-driven fridge compressor leaked oil,
frying the clutch plate & immobilizing the pulley.
Repairs underway!
Of course, you always need a few boat maintenance items.
So we walked over to nearby Island Water World.
Nice Flamboyant trees on the way.
We called them Poinciana in Jamaica:
Foodland Supermarket is just across the street from the marina.
But we also wanted to check out Spiceland Mall.
Grabbed a cab the first time we went.
Here's the queen with our cabbie:
Took the minibus back.
These are great. They come by every few minutes.
Pick you up anywhere - not just at the bus stop.
Only EC$2.50 (less than US$1) each way.
We've found the Grenadian people to be wonderful.
The ones we've met have been polite & friendly.
Best island so far!
Walked from Spiceland Mall to nearby Grand Anse Beach.
Beautiful:
Took the dinghy over to the Carenage with George & Joanne of RomantaSea.
Here's St. George's as seen from the dinghy in the Carenage:
And here's the gang by the old British phone booths:
Saturday is Market Day. So off we went.
We actually squeezed RomantaSea, Julia Maria & Dance Aweigh into our dinghy.
Tied up in the Carenage & walked into town:
Passed a cop on the street.
Just like a Jamaican "Red Seam":
Mom looks good beside the bananas:
Bought the mandatory "Spice Necklace" from Adonis.
She is actually mentioned in the book "Spice Necklace" by Ann Vanderhoof.
Of course, we had to buy some nutmeg & cocoa:
Our new French Canadian friends,
Lyne & Guy of Julia Maria:
The market was fun - a lot more orderly than we've seen in other islands.
Then it was off to lunch.
We found this out of the way, local restaurant,
Country Kitchen:
The food was fabulous - & inexpensive.
Here's Kevin of Chameleon
digging into a plateful of "Oil Down"
Oil Down is Grenada's national dish.
It's made with breadfruit, salt beef, coconut milk & a bunch of other "ground food"
& I can vouch for it:
DELICIOUS!

Happy Summer Solstice! Love the Grenada scenery, the "Red Seam", Poinciana and all those green bananas. (They look way better than the ones we get from Walmart). But I'll take your word for the "Oil Down" stuff. Man, that mechanical thingie looks poorly ~ I'll bet Les could fix it for you in a heartbeat! Good luck with your current mechanic!! Bill 'n Les.
ReplyDeleteAm wondering what "a bit rough" really means re: sailing over Kick'em Jenny (wonderful name for an active volcano - and underwater, no less!) Great views of St. George's from the water. Good luck with the repairs. Mary Lou
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you are returning to the U.S. for a while! Hope to see you then. I just had a Charter Boat Captain in here (Destin Office)who knows the area you are sailing: Bequia, Caricu, Union Island, etc. I showed him the pic of your "Fried Fridge Compressor" and he said, if you don't get it fixed in Grenada - a great place is Peake's Marine in Trinidad. Blessings from Bill 'n Les!!
ReplyDeleteHi Rich and Marg, sounds like you may be on your way to Trinidad. Nice staying at Port Louis. Looks like you hit the nice weather. Take care, Randy and Lynn
